Auxiliary = Soldier Support

May 2010

Saturday, May 29th, the American Legion Auxiliary had its annual Poppy Day.  Members were at Wal-Mart, Bullocks, and Pat's Bermuda Triangle handing out poppies to the community.  We want to thank all who donated funds to help our New Mexico State Veterans Home and to the three locations for allowing us to be at their place of business.
This program provides the public the opportunity to join with The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary in expressing appreciation to the veterans who survived, in remembering those who gave their lives for the security of this nation, and in giving aid to those veterans and their families who are in need. All of this is expressed by the wearing of the memorial poppy.

POPPY

The American Legion was the first national organization to adopt the poppy as a memorial flower. This action was taken at the National Convention held in Cleveland, Ohio on September 27-29, 1920. The American Legion Auxiliary adopted it at the October, 1921 National Convention that was held in Kansas City, Missouri.

These are the only poppies that are handmade by hospitalized veterans. The veterans are paid for every poppy. All proceeds realized from the distribution of the poppies are used by the  American Legion  Auxiliary exclusively for the Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation work, and for the families of the veterans.  Locally, we contribute to the needs of the veterans at New Mexico State Veterans Home in T or C.

This program provides the public the opportunity to join with The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary in expressing appreciation to the veterans who survived, in remembering those who gave their lives for the security of this nation, and in giving aid to those veterans and their families who are in need. The young people of the nation are invited to participate in Poppy Poster Contests, which are held in schools. The Units of the American Legion Auxiliary throughout the United States sponsor these contests.

Please keep these facts fresh in your mind when you see the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 44 of Elephant Butte distributing poppies on May 29th.

April 2010

davonna.jpg

In the American Legion Auxiliary, April is the Month of the Military Child.  Our guest for the April Meeting was Davonna Stoner and her children.  Davonna is the mother to Chris, 16; Elizabeth, 14 ;James, 8 and step daughter Sandy.

Davonna visited with the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 44 explaining the effect to her entire family but most especially to her children when she and her husband, Don, were deployed in the service of our country.

Davonna joined the Army in 1992 and was active until 1997.  She was in the active reserves from 1997 - 2000.  She was deployed to a lot of different places, the first being the Middle East, the last being Iraq.  During the last deployment, Davonna was injured and was medically discharged.

Our Unit wants to salute and thank Davonna for all she has done for our liberties.  This is a remarkable family.

At the March, 2010 meeting of Unit 44 of the American Legion Auxiliary, 8 new members were proudly initiated into the Unit.  This Unit has well over 400 members, second only to Albuquerque in the state of New Mexico.  Highlighting the meeting was a visit from District 7 President, Nancy Palladino.  Ms. Palladino welcomed the new members and thanked the rest of the Unit for their volunteerism explaining that active members are the life blood of any organization.

In the front row are six of the new members; 2 are in the second row.  Initiated were Zenith Baker, Glenda Wellberg, Debra Morris, Brenda Paulson (and her dog Gracie Allen), Rita Ritacca, Jacqueline Stockmar, Sandy Squier, and Mindee Holguin.
