Commander’s Comment – August, 2013
Hope you all had a great July and are looking forward to the rest of the year. I’m sure you have all received your notice that it’s time to pay your annual dues. Everyone paying before the end of September will be entered in an “Early Bird” drawing. Whoever’s name is drawn will receive a refund of their 2014 dues. The drawing will be in October and the winner will be notified ASAP.
I’d like to thank everyone who came out and supported the benefit for Wyatt Slanina. Deone and Donnie put on a great feed and The SAL, along with the Post, presented the family with a healthy donation.
The Second Annual Legion Family Golf Tournament is coming up September 21st. There’s limited space, so get your team entered early. Don’t forget this month’s General Membership meeting on Saturday, August 17th, at 10:30 a.m.

Traditionally, the summer months are our most difficult revenue generating times; so please come into the Post and support the many functions and fun activities the committee has planed.

Good news on the financial front. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013 the Post turned an annual profit slightly in excess of $7,000. The first three quarters of the year were not looking very positive as losses were mounting. But the last few months began to turn around largely due to a pickup in gaming revenues, although the bar, kitchen and pull tabs were all working efficiently and producing as well. Last year at the same time the Post suffered a loss in excess of $2,000 for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012. Although we are currently on track for a good financial year we are looking at some capital expenses almost immediately as an HVAC unit needs replacing and parking lot maintenance is required. Despite the needed repairs the coming fiscal year is starting out on a solid footing and I am optimistic about 2013-2014 period. See you all at the Post!

In order to continuing entry into Post 44, you must be paid-up and receive your 2013 membership card. Effective July 1, 2013 – new membership cards for the new fiscal year will be available from National through our NM Department.
Activities Committee – Kathy Norton and Linda Amdal)
First of all, we would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to Kathy Norton for all she has done with the Activities Committee and for the Post!! Since she has gotten a “Real Job” her participation will likely be reduced considerably and we are going to miss her!! Thank you, Kathy, for all you have done!!
The monthly 9 Ball Tournament has been a blast! Plan on attending Sunday, August 4th at 3:00 to get in on the fun! Please bring some finger foods to munch on.
Thursday, August 8th @ 1:00, we will try the “Bunco Party” again. Last month attendance was down, so be sure to mark your calendars and get your chance to clang the cow bell!! Saturday, August 10th is the “All-You-Can-Eat” Breakfast and Auxiliary Bake Sale.
Linda & Steve Ross are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary @ the Post on Saturday, August 17th @ 3:00 with a pot luck & Bob Acre with karaoke! Let’s all join Steve & Linda & help them celebrate this wonderful milestone!
It’s time to celebrate August Birthdays and “Hot August Nights” Sunday, August 25th @ 5:00. Break out your beachwear (no speedo’s please!) and come for some “Name-That-Tune” with Bob Acre!! That is always a hoot!! Hot dogs & Ice Cream Sundaes will be served. For additional events, see the attached calendar.
Sneak Peak for September: 2nd Annual American Legion Family Golf Scramble at T or C Municipal Golf Course, Saturday, September 21st. Flyers are posted around the Post. If you have questions, contact either Linda Nenno or Linda Amdal.
Don’t forget to watch for flyers on The Traveling Elephant 9-Ball Tournament between Post 44 and VFW 1389 starting in Sept.. We won the toss for first game at Post 44.. Come cheer us on!
