Newsletter – November 2014

COMMANDER Al Norton

The past months revenue earned by the Post was favorable. Gaming is still much lower than we are accustomed to.

We have a misunderstanding I would like to clear up. The question is, “Why are we asking members for donations when at the same time the Post is giving money away?” The answer is under New Mexico gaming laws one third of the monies paid to us by gaming must be given to charity and education. In the past we have mailed the money to the charities that were approved by the membership during our monthly membership meeting at Post 44. This is why most people have not been aware of our responsibilities and commitments to the community. The newspaper article presenting a check for uniforms is our attempt to let everyone know what the American Legion Post 44 is doing to help our community.

We had a very successful Golf tournament. Fun was had by all. Thank you to all who worked to make this a great event. I would like to give a special Thank you to the Sons of the American Legion (SALS) for donating their portion of the proceeds for the Golf Tourney back to the American Legion general fund. In addition, the SALS donated all the leftovers from the Elephant Days event back to the post. This kind of dedication to the welfare of the American Legion Post 44 goes way above the call of duty.

We are fortunate to have members that are willing to give their all and make Post 44 a sound and happy place. Please join us at the Post for our monthly meeting and supporting our events.

We will survive because we love our community. Keep your donations coming.

Finance Officer- Bill Conklin

I would like to start of by thanking those of that made a donation. It was greatly needed and appreciated. We have made the turn, but still looking for ways to cut expenses without hurting our services to members. It looks like it’s going to be another black month. There has been question as to how we are giving money away when we are hurting so badly. The funds we give out are from gaming and are state mandate, to keep our nonprofit status and gaming. This is run by the charity committee and gaming. The post is the last to receive funds from gaming, after everyone one has been paid. Besides it is our duty as the American Legion to support our youth and community. Bare with us things will get better, the staff and officers are doing everything to make your experiences at the post pleasurable. It’s my pleasure to serve as your financial officer.

Activities Committee – Kathy Norton and Linda Amdal

Here we go- heading into the holidays. YIKES!! Before I get into the holiday stuff I’d like to extend a big THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS to Linda Nenno and her Worker Bees for a fabulous job on and the success of the Golf Tournament! Well done. KUDOS to Bob Acre too, for your generous donation to the success and entertainment you have provided for our Post. THANK YOU!!!

Our first holiday event will be putting up the “Angel Tree” on Sat. Nov. 1st at 1:00 p.m. The Angel Tree will be decorated with the first names of all the public schools kindergarten children with clothing sizes. All members are encouraged to take one or more tags, purchase items and bring them, unwrapped with the tag, to the Post. There will be a gift wrapping party at a later date. What a wonderful way to share the Christmas Spirit, than with a child. The gifts will be delivered to the school prior to Christmas break.

Where’s Waldo??? Oops, I mean, does anyone know where the WII game and controllers went? It would be fun to get that going again. Please let Linda A. Kathy N. or Linde P. know if you know about its whereabouts. Thanks.

You may or may not have noticed the price reduction on many of the Wednesday dinners. We are making every effort to be cost effective and still provide a filling but affordable meal for you. Speaking of Wednesday dinners, many thanks to all of you that have been willing to volunteer in the kitchen!! You are the best! We still need helpers for the December (3 dinners) so don’t be shy!! Wednesday, Thanksgiving Eve we will be having a pot luck and DJ music with Bob Acre. The Post will be closed Thanksgiving Day. The Veterans dinner will be the third Wednesday (19th) with a full blown Turkey Dinner with all the fixin’s.

Our monthly Saturday dances have been fun, so be sure to mark your calendars for Sat. Nov 15th from 6-10 pm to enjoy the great music by Cactus Flats.

Congrats to VFW 1389 for the close win @ last month’s Lucero Pool Challenge! The Post really wants that trophy back, so come in Sat. Nov 22 at 1:45 pm to see who will triumph!

Also, remember the first and third Sunday’s there is a “Pay to Stay” 9-Ball tournament starting at 3:00.

Sat. Nov. 29th from 9 am to 3 pm, there will be a Craft Fair at the Post with all kinds of unique goodies & gifts for the holidays. Food and beverages will be available while you shop! You can’t get that kind of service at the Mall!! Contact Linda Nenno or Linde Polstin on availability of tables (@ $10.00 per table) if you would like to be a vendor.

A peek into December…. The Post Breakfast and Luminaria are Sat. Dec 13th. The Post will again participate at the Luminaria, as in years past. We could use some volunteers to help distribute the “Sloppy Joes” at the event. It’s lots of fun to participate, but the same folks have done it several years running. It’s time to distribute the Wealth of Giving.

The Employee and Post-Christmas Party and dance are slated for Sat. Dec. 20th. Mark your calendars.

Christmas Eve will be Pot Luck & the Post will be closed on Christmas Day. Wed. Dec 31st will again be a “New York New Year’s Eve” party. More info to follow on that, next month.

Thanks to all of your support of and participation in the Post Activities. Suggestions and ideas are always welcome!!

See you at the Post!
